St Augustine Beach Real Estate

Locale – St Augustine Beach

St Augustine, the oldest European-settled city in the United States, was located on Anastasia Island from 1566-1572. Spanish settlers had founded the city on the west shore of the Matanzas River on September 8, 1576. The settlers built a fort and homes, but the fort and the supplies inside of it burned.

On May 18, 1566, the council voted to relocate the city to the barrier island across from the first location. St Augustine moved to the barrier island for the protection from European enemies and Native Americans entering the port. No physical evidence remains of the documented 6-year city presence on the island, including 2 forts, barracks, a jail, some homes, fields for crops, wells and government buildings.

In 1572, St Augustine returned to the mainland.

St Augustine Beach is located on Anastasia Island, a barrier island southeast of the oldest city in America – St Augustine. The famed Bridge of Lions connects St Augustine with Anastasia Island. The city of St Augustine Beach has a total land area of 1.9 square miles. The St Johns County Ocean Pier is also located in St Augustine Beach, close to many restaurants and tourist attractions.
