    Locale – Fleming Island

    Settled by Irish immigrant George Fleming who received a grant of 1000 acres for his military service from the Spanish governor of East Florida. In 1790, George Fleming built Hibernia Plantation (Hibernia is the Latin word for Ireland) and the plantation was left to his son Colonel Lewis Fleming when George Fleming died in 1821.

    Fleming Island is located on the west side of the St Johns River. A 7-mile long walking, jogging and biking sidewalk that is 8 foot wide runs the length of the island along Highway 17.
